MZUZU CITY: GROWING AT THE SPEED OF LIGHT

Sitting beautifully on Viphya plateau is Mzuzu city, where the freedom fighter late Thom Chakufwa Chihana is laid to rest. Ever growing at unprecedented pace, yet cost of living in Mzuzu is cheap compared to other cities in Malawi. Before deforestation Mzuzu was globally known for its super cool to cold weather all year round due to the largest man-made forest ever created in Africa called Chikangawa. Attempts are still being made to revive the city’s ever-green earthly status.

Some of the spectacular features of the city are its proximity to the beautiful beaches of Lake Malawi in Nkhatabay. To reach the beaches from Mzuzu, one passes the stunning curves that make the journey to and from the beaches a memorable experience, the highs and lows in the terrain are too inviting. To coffee lovers, the famous coffee shop in Mzuzu casts the aromatic spell you need for the day.

There is also a bustling apparel market a few feet from the coffee shop named Taifa market owing to the abundance of merchandise that reach the city through the ports of Tanzania. Traders from all over Malawi and some from Zambia flock to Mzuzu for shopping.

The city’s most native names add an exciting twist to the tale that will never be forgotten. Listen! ‘Kaning’ina’ is soon after leaving the banking street as we go to the beaches of Chintheche. ‘Katawa’ is an area close to the city’s football ground. In Katawa, there once born a mighty gospel band called Katawa Singers, a songbird that was a unique voice for the city. Then is an area called Lunyang’wa…wow! It seems the city’s destiny was not much tampered by foreign forces, and it’s worth exploring for yourself. A wide choice of hotels and lodges are also available for your convenience. Experience the magic of Mzuzu!
