Malawi adopted a multiparty system of governance through a 1993 referendum after Thom Chakufwa Chihana challenged Dr. Hastings Kamuzu Banda for a new system of governance which would accord the citizens their birthright. Following the referendum, the first multi-party national elections were held in 1994, and Dr. Bakili Muluzi of the United Democratic Front; won and became the first democratic president.
