Governance

Malawi adopted a multiparty system of governance through a 1993 referendum after Thom Chakufwa Chihana challenged Dr. Hastings Kamuzu Banda for a new system of governance which would accord the citizens their birthright. Kamuzu had ruled Malawi from 1964 in a one party dictatorial regime which never entertained any calls for human rights whatsoever!

Following the referendum, the first multi-party national elections were held in 1994, and Dr. Bakili Muluzi of the United Democratic Front; won and became the first democratic president. From this time on Malawi has been embracing democratic principles including respecting the will of the people whilst ensuring adherence to the constitution and the Laws of the land. In Malawi people freely express themselves, live freely without fear of the regime. This democratic environment is ideal for visitors and investors. Visit Malawi today and experience total freedom guaranteed by law. We hope your will also take your responsibility to uphold the Laws of the land as you enjoy your freedoms.
