  • Rainy season: Late December-March for south & central regions.
  • Rainy season: December-April for northern region.
  • April-July, cool to cold.
  • August-September, warm.
  • October-December, very hot.
  • Driving in Malawi is left-hand side. Observe road signs always.
  • Road traffic police can use breathalysers so don’t drink and drive.
  • If you think you’re lost ask for direction, many people are happy to assist
  • If you’re white by race some may refer to you as “mzungu” which means “whiteman”. Note this is not offensive in Malawi. The early missionaries were first referred to as “azungu” (pl) and got used to it, children particularly love it and may call mzungu! mzungu! mzungu! You may be called mzungu since others do not know your name yet. So take it easy!!!
  • Equally Asians, may be called “mwenye” or “amwenye” (pl)
  • And Chinese are called “nChinese/ma chinese or ma China” (pl)
  • Staple food in Malawi is Nsima/Sima with fish, meat, chicken, legumes and vegetables etc. However, chips and rice is optional. Being an agrarian society; there is abundant foods to satisfy your mouth.
  • We have a popular traditional non-alcoholic beverage known in Chichewa as Thobwa (central and southern Malawi) whilst in the northern Malawi it is called ‘Chindongwa’. Mode of preparation between the north and the other two regions differ a bit.
  • Other unique delicacies include fried locusts, edible caterpillars, mice etc
  • Mobile communication covers the whole country, including country side (TNM & Airtel)
